Misinformed people think adopting a healthy lifestyle is difficult and too rigid to be sustainable. Switching to a healthy diet is easier than you think. Below are a few smart eating habits, l have implemented to have helped me shed excess weight and kept me on track with my health and fitness goals.
Stock your cupboards and pantry with healthy options. I get hungry a lot and snack through out the day. I tend to reach for what l have readily available, hence l have taken to keeping healthy snacks on hand to keep me from going off track. I keep nuts in small portion packages, a fruit bowl nearby and cut up veggies (celery, carrots) to dip into nut butter.
Make drinking water delicious and appealing. I still struggle with this one because water is just not that exciting. But that 3l won’t get in by itself. I have been filling my water bottle with with cucumber cuts, mint leaves or orange and lemon slices to jazz it up. To ensure l drink as much water as possible l have a timer that goes off every 3 hours letting me know l need to drink up. If an alarm is too much for you just place the bottle in a place you can easily see to remind yourself to drink it.
Cut down on dinner so you wake up hungry and ready for breakfast. I purposely cook a single portion so that l don’t go overboard with the eating because for the life of me l can’t stop eating until l finish everything my plate. So l just cook a small portion and sleep early, and wake up in the morning hungry as hell. This is ideal because it is a better distribution of energy and will help me burn fat more efficiently.
Drink warm water with squeezed lemon as a habit every morning just as you wake up. It helps detoxify and cleans your system for efficient metabolism. I alternate between lemon water and apple cider water as they both detoxify and jump start the metabolism. Watch it with the apple cider though, it is the pits but effective. I usually settle for 2 tbsps in 1l of water. Take it several steps further by making this detox tea every morning: 1 cup warm water, 2 tbsp lemon juice,2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp raw honey, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp ginger and a dash of cayenne pepper.
Keep cayenne pepper on the table and use it as you would normally use salt. It is healing and will help your metabolism. I sprinkle that beast on everything, l usually go overboard and sprinkle a little too much and eat my meal watery eyed but hey.
Cut out one nasty ingredient for a month. I have cut out processed, unhealthy sugar and replaced it with honey, and l have been good on the most part about staying away from the sweets and biscuits aisle. I eat red meat only once or twice a month. You can give yourself a break from processed foods, red meat, gluten, diary or sugar. Many people report substantial weight loss when they give up processed foods, while some report clear skin after cutting out fried foods from their diets. Cutting out one ingredient doesn’t take much thought and is easier than trying to do everything all at once.
Introduce fermented food to your diet. These keep your gut in tip top shape. Keep a bottle of kimchi or sauerkraut in the fridge and mix it into your sandwich, soup, salad or bowl. Just a tablespoon or two will help provide beneficial probiotics.
Be more aware of what you eat by using your cellphone to snap a picture of everything you put in your mouth over a period of a few days. It might surprise you to see what you are eating over what you think you eat. If that is too time consuming, download an app like Under Armour’s My Calorie Counter. You input your height and weight and weight-loss goals. You log in whatever you eat and it calculates your calories and macros and tells you if you are on track or not.
Rather than acting on impulse and eating whatever you crave, try breathing away your cravings with three deep belly breaths. You’ll find cravings often only last a few seconds, and if you are mindful you can let them pass by. This is especially for people like me because l can not stop eating.
If you get more hungry than you’d like to, you can remedy this by deeply inhaling your favorite aromatherapy oil. Keep a bottle in your bag or pocket and use it to detract from eating without thinking. Also me. I also keep a picture of my miserable overweight self to remind myself of where l was, how far l have come and where l want to be.
